NEW YEAR 2012 MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER:
I am delighted to welcome in 2012 feeling proud of students and staff for their hard work and dedication throughout 2011, and excited about the year ahead at Cockburn. The London 2012 Olympics will demonstrate many of the values and expectations we strive to model such as resilience, independence and pride. Yr11 and Yr10 students begin their GCSE exams this term and I wish them luck and congratulate them on their hard work so far. We also look forward to the upcoming launch of Frog, our new Virtual Learning Environment, which will allow improved communication between parents/carers and school, as well as providing exciting learning experiences for the students.

I would like to congratulate students on such an excellent first term at school in terms of how they have approached their lessons and how they are wearing their uniform.  As you are aware we continue to raise the bar in all areas as we wish our students to be successful and smart.  A big thank you to parents and carers for your support with uniform and equipment.  It means we can focus on your child’s progress and well-being.

There are some exciting developments for post 16 education at Cockburn.  We are working in partnership with Leeds City College to secure post 16 provision on this site from September 2012.  The new Cockburn Sixth Form marks an exciting time for post-16 education in South Leeds.  We will offer a broader range of qualifications, in ultra-modern facilities, supported by a highly qualified and caring team of staff working in partnership with Leeds City College.  By the time students reach the end of Year 11, we have an enormous amount of knowledge about how each student learns and we have excellent relationships with them. This is such a promising platform from which students can begin Key Stage 5, taught by teachers who know them well, who they like and who are committed to securing places for students at university and /or employment.

During 2011, the school undertook consultation with all stakeholders as to whether to progress to becoming a Foundation School, forming a 0-19 Trust along with our main feeder primaries. It was finally decided in July to proceed and, as of 1st September 2011, Cockburn School owns its lands/assets, employs its own staff directly and is responsible for its own admissions.  The Governing Body is wholly committed to ensuring that this is part of our progress to becoming an even more community-focused school, with our Trust primary schools

I would also like to draw your attention to our Training Days and Early Closure dates for this year.  Click here for more information.

We look forward to the challenge of exceeding our already established success rate as we continue on our journey of “Transformation to Excellence”

It is going to be a great year and I look forward to working with you.

Yours sincerely

D Gurney
